Beware...Spoilers

Yesterday the kids and I were sitting in the kitchen talking about our plans for the weekend which involve lots of family, eating, and an Easter egg hunt. Levi looks at me and asks, "Is the Easter Bunny real?"

Now I have issues with convincing my children to believe in something like the Easter bunny. Santa, I can almost rationalize with being sure to emphasize that we can be "Santas" for others. But the Easter Bunny? No, I really don't want this somewhat scary, large, VERY COMMERCIAL bunny taking over my very sacred Easter holiday!

So, this all runs through my head in about 1/2 a second and I just say, "No". Just like that. For some reason, I didn't think about what might happen. I figured, like me, they knew in their hearts that the bunny wasn't real. Maybe they were just pretending?? I don't think so. Both Levi and Nat acted SO SURPRISED that it surprised me and mad me SOO SAD. I had just ruined the magic and there was NO going back. I practically started crying! This led to a conversation about why adults lie to children...

Anyway, I totally regret spoiling my children's fun:( I wish I had been prepared with an answer. George says I should have asked them what THEY thought. That would have been good. I believe I should have faked a coughing attack and kept my thoughts to myself. *Sigh* If only....

Ahhhhh. Sad. But funny. I'm sorry. I just can't stop laughing! But think of how much easier it will be for you now! And you'll get all the credit for the fun stuff you do!

Oh Anna! Mike says thanks for going through that so we could learn. Although I have to say that I'm tired of Olivia asking "Is santa real?" I'm ready to just tell her the truth. But a part of me feels that then a part of their childhood is over. It'll all be okay.

Aiden just asked me last night if the Easter Bunny was a bunny or a person. I asked him what he thought, and he said, "A person." I tried to be all casual (I wasn't ready to move into the "if the Easter Bunny isn't real... what about Santa???" discussion), and I asked him why he thought that. He said, "I think it's a person in a bunny costume. HAHAHA!! That would be SO FUNNY Mom!!!" and that was the end of the discussion. I'm hoping to put it off for a little while longer!!
